I am using the Ehiem cannister Professionall II 2026 for my 4ft tank. Can't use a sump due to space constraint.

The tank is in the 2nd week of cycling and I will like to find out if the bio-rings and substrate that comes with the cannister should be changed to either coral sand or others.

Any advise?

:) It depends on what kind of filtration u want your canister to perform(bio. chem or mech). Most people would leave the job of bio filtration to live rocks and DSB. Your canister can be used for chem or mech filtration like having mediums that control phosphate, nitrates and filter pads to clean the water. But be warned that unless frequent maintenance is done for your canister, the buildup of nitrates can be high. :)

My Bio filtration shall be done mainly by LR (~50Kg) & LS (5" DSB). Thus the cannister shall be doing chem & Mechanical filtration. What do you recommend me to put in the cannister.

I'll guess I have to do regular maintenance to minimise it becoming a nitrates factory. Is Twice weekly sufficient or weekly?
