Danger of Hyposalinity Treatment

Recommended Posts

I had a recent ich outbreak in my tank, and decided to treat the disease with the hyposalinity treatment, reducing the salinity to 1.009. It was ok for the first day, except that i noticed that my True Percula clown had become more lethargic than usual, though still eating.

This morning when i looked at my tank again, i saw that the clown had pop-eye both sides, and its stomach was super bloated.. dead. This was exactly the same situation as had happened a year ago, when i instituted hyposalinity treatment for a similar ich outbreak. The clownfish and the niger trigger also became popeye, bloated stomach and died subsequently.

Reading the available material online, popeye and bloated stomach are not signs of ich infection.

It was notable that my other fishes (yellow tang, jawfish and emperor angel) undergoing hypo now do not have these bloatedness at all, so it seems that some fishes can tolerate hypo better than others.

Anyone has any similar experience? Or noticed any side effects with hyposalinity treatment?
