When you mean you want to dye your hair, do you mean bleach? Because bleaching is permanent, i.e. you got to wait for your hair to grow out. If you merely dye your hair, it is not that permanent and may last for a couple of months. Bleaching however, will make your hair very, very dry. You have to use conditioner or some type of treatment to make it less dry.

And do you merely want highlights (i.e. some streaks of colour in your hair) or do you want to colour all your hair? ;)

Have you coloured your hair before? If not, I highly suggest going for the highlights. This way, you can know whether the colour suits you and it's not as drastic as colouring all your hair.

Of course, DIY colouring will be much cheaper at home as compared to going to a saloon. Depending on the length of your hair and how much colouring you want done, the saloon trip may cost you from $80-150 (including haircut). That price range is for guys only. For the ladies, it's more expensive.

Dyeing doesn't mean your hair won't be dry. It will still be dry, but not as dry as bleaching.

And if you intend to DIY, you can go to Guardian Pharmacy, Watsons etc. to check out their range in hair colour. Before you make the decision on which brand to go for, check out the percentage of Hydrogen peroxide (H202) in the product. The higher the %, the stronger it is. DIY bleaching products have about 40% H202, if my memory does not fail me. ;)

nah this is my first time dying

u mentioned sth about hydrogen peroxide related to the strength of the dye....does the strength affect the colour outcome? also, does the strength affect the dryness of the hair after tt?

any methods to help with the dryness?

I've done DIY before and it has never been able to get me the colour I want....

I tried using more than necessary and leaving it on longer than prescribed but still nothing... in the end bit the bullet and went to a salon to do it up instead...

Yes, the strength of the H2O2 does affect the outcome. The stronger it is, the more vibrant the colour usually is. However, your hair usually becomes drier as a result. You can however, shorten the time the instructions advise you to keep the colour on. I.e. if the instructions tell you to keep the colour on for about 30mins before washing, then maybe keep it on for about 20 mins.

To overcome the dryness, you have to use conditioners regularly, daily preferably. Once a week, I use a deep hair treatment by Fudge. Use it like a conditioner. I am not sure whether they have this product in SG as I bought it from Australia. However, I am sure there are other hair treatment products on the market.

hurhur...ervine: what brand and colour were u using when u DIYed?

brand ah... I tried a few before... I think I tried Gasby, Loreal, and Revlon??? cannot remember but I remember all of them didn't work well for me... I wanted a simple brown colour...

Sometimes I did it myself but that really burns the scalp, sometimes my gf did it for me but every time the colour didn't really go on very well...

Don't know is it my technique got problem, but I leave it on for like 1hr instead of 30mins also the colour is very faint...
