Hydrometer

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I'm new to the hobby, and am still in the planning and deciding stage of starting a nano tank.

Right now, am looking for a dependable hydrometer. No doubt about it, a refractometer is indeed an accurate instrument but I'm unable to afford one at the moment. I'm looking for a swing arm model manufactured by Instant Ocean. How does Coral-life compare?

Thanks,

drew

a refractometer is used to measure the specific gravity of our saltwater through reflective index.

given that light refract at different angle at different medium.

an accurate piece of equipment .

coralife deep 6 is good for a floating arm hydrometer. Apparently they are each tested and certified as being accurate to 0.001, which is good enough for me!

Real reefs don't have glass bottoms....(...think about it)

Hi folks,

I agree that a refractometer is the best and most accurate instrument, but I'm tied down by budget. I handled it in an aerospace plant, calibrating it in conjunction with some unknown liquid.

I'm having trouble getting the corallife hydrometer to work. Perhaps I'm not sure how it should be working. Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks,

a (andrew)

Actually Guyz;

We do not need accuracy that much for marine, but it is good to have a refractometer as it is so much more convenient to use and slightly less messy.

The floating hygro is the worst as it is simply disturbed by the current/flow in the tank. If no current, it is still accurate. The floating arm hydrometer is good enuf for marine and most cost effective.

Me I use the floating Hygro for 3 years, only last month uses a refractometer, and find it is more convenient.

Equipment:

30G Corner Tank with 10G Sump, 2 x 24W artinic T5, 1 x 24W 10K, 1x 24W 20K, 3" Grade 0 sand & Live rocks, Activated Carbon, Bio-home, 2 x Seio M620, Hailea 1/2HP Chiller, Redsea Pro Skimmer

Live Stock:

Turbo Snail x 1, Green Mandarin Dragonet X 2, Blue Tang X 2, True percular x 2, 1 x Algae Bleenie, Clarke clown x 2

Reef:

1 x 2" Blue maxima, Red/Brown/Purple Mushroom (Discosoma), Pink Ricordea yuma, A little colony Brown/Green common Zoanthus, Red/Pink/Green US Zoanthus, Eagle-eye Zoathus, 14 Branch Goniopora Pandoraensis, 1 Starburst Polyps, 3 + 2 Branch Frogspawn, 4 Blasto, palythoa, Cheato

RIPs (Since June 2005):

1. Sabae clown (KO by Clarke clown) 2. 1 branch melted frogspawn 4 branch 3. Golden maxima (Ripe the base off rock by me) 4. Algae Bleenie x 2 (Starvation) 5. Blue Maxima x 1, 2 x Maxima, 1 x frogspawn, rics (Overtemp...)

Yes, and refractometer prices had dropped from the $100+ when it was first introduced to the hobby and I find that it had slowly become a must-have for this hobby.
