Need Help Setting Up Nano

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and have checked out nano-reef as well as reefcentral.com. I've been drawn to the allure of nano-reef, as I think it'll be managable for me as a newbie. Right now, I'm just short of running out to the LFS and buying live rocks and livestock. But I've got a nagging feeling that I'm still not prepared for that.

Inventory:

2 by 1 ft tank

Rena internal filter

Air pump

PL lights

These are the items I have now, is it enough to set up a nano reef tank (with a low maintanence species coral + sea anaemone)? As for the livestock, I'm thinking of keeping 2 firefish, 1 cleaner shrimp and bicolour dottyback (with stripe across eye). I am also thinking of getting a small skimmer or setting up a refugium, using a modded hang-on filter.

I've been to Reborn aquariums but it's rather far as I stay in the west. Any other aquariums which are highly recommended?

I'll be buying live sand and rocks for the tank. Will be cycling it for at least a week before adding livestock.

Please advice.

Thanks,

drew

I would advice newbie to stay off anemones, unless u want to experience something bad which will put u off reefing

And cycle ur tank longer, at least a month not a week, ur water parameters won't be stable enough after 1 week, esp for nanos

Hi,

Andylee and Rapalla, thanks for the prompt reply. I hopped down to Jireh Aquarium earlier in the day. Was thinking of getting live sand and rock, but again left empty handed. I figured that I've still got many unanswered questions and am not sure on the setups. Anyway, is there any other aquariums where I can get 100%, good quality live sand and rocks especially in the western part of Singapore?

Thanks,

drew.

Hi hobgoblin

Nano is not really a easier tank than a standard 3ft or 4ft tank. It has its pros and cons. I have a 2ft by 2ft. It was my 2nd tank and 1st one was even smaller (1.5ft by 1ft).

Starting out small helps with the learning and prevent killing alot of livestocks. But it is very difficult as well coz nano tank is hard to stablise parameters since it holds very small amt of sea water compare to a 4ft tank. One dead fish or overdosing of additives or overfeeding can cause alot of problems to nano tank.

Andy is right. PLs dun keep anemone... too hard to keep it and not suitable for small tank. I was also very tempted but managed to stay off it.

Rather than RO water, pple who keeps nano tank usually buy distilled water to top it up as tap water will have too much TDS. U need to explore all this b4 putting one nano tank in service. Otherwise, u will have a hard time to maintain it.

Atos: The Nano tank from Tapio weblink was awesome. new things to learn.... 2ft with SPS.... thats really hard....
