wpcheng
Hi All I would like to find out a few things about UV and Ionizer to treat parasites. i am not having any corals in my tank 1 Which is more effective- UV or Ionizer to kill parasites eg White Spot etc ? Will the parasites return to begin the 2nd cycle again after killing off the 1st cycles ? ( Parasites have a 10 to 14 days incubation period) 2 Which is a cheaper option to do the job effectively ? 3 Does either method disrupt the biological system ie kill off the good bacteria ? 4 Do u need to switch on 24X7 ? 5 Currently, I am using AquaPharm to kill the white spot which i think may disrupt the biological system. Is there any other medication which can kill the parasites without using UV or Ionizer. I am trying to keep my tank simple for easy and cheaper maintenance
k0na_scab
eh i believe you meant Ozonizer - O3 ? to use the the ozonizer , u'll need a reactor , usually O3 is fed in the air in-take of the skimmer. IMO the O3 would be more effective to kill the free-swiming parasites. the ozonizer should be cheaper, no need a change of bulbs. Both methods kills off most of the bacteria that it comes in contact with. you can run the UVC 24-7 not the ozonizer. the ORP reading will go up. both methods treats parasites which are FREE-SWIMMING !!! if its on your fish , then u'll need to carry out other treatments, eg. formalin dips , copper. ~k0na
wpcheng
Hi k0na_scab Thanks for replying. I saw u mentioning Waterlife Myxazin in another reply. How effective is it in killing bacteria? Does it also kill good bacteria also ? Will there be any harm to the cleaner shrimps ?
k0na_scab
hm, bacteria ? they ones that thrive in the bio balls and such ? not too sure on that , more of less it does IMO but it says reef safe. but y would you want to kill the bacteria ? I wouldn't try it with my shrimps. Most likely they will >.< dont put your bet on Waterlife Myxazin, IME ich takes some time to get rid of them proper.
