position of md40

hi, does the position of the md40 affect its performance?

I tried using the md40 to be a return tee off to a weipro 2011 skimmer. The tank is a 2.5 feet with IOS. The pump inlet is connected to the IOS from over the top of the tank. However it is unable to suck the water from the tank and it gets really noisy. Is is becos the pump is on the same level with the tank and trying to suck from the top of the tank? Later i use a dymax 2000l/h external pump it does not have this problem.

Just thought I'll hitch onto this thread, instead of creating a new thread.

Anyway, my cabinet has a thin layer of styrofoam, where my sump tank sits on. Is it alright to let a MD40 pump sit directly on the styrofoam? I heard so much about the pump generating alot of heat. I was wondering whether it is okay to let the pump sit directly on the styrofoam, without the styrofoam melting. I will be using this pump to run an insump 24"X6" beckett.

Or do I have to build a small wooden box for the pump to sit on? As to elevate it from the styrofoam.

Cheers! :)
