friend gave me a clam.. but 1/4 mantle gone already.. a seems like it has a hole where the mantle is gone

i see the clams here when they open.. completely sealed unlike mine with the hole.. is it dying slowly??

how long have you got the clam, when did it started, your tanks specs...etc......

clam should not be too diffcult....you can go to the forum at www.clamsdirect.com the people there are quite helpful.....

As tineng has said, a pic would be best.

A receding mantle is also known as pinched mantle. Is something stressing out the clam? Is something nipping at the flesh? Be careful of clams. It can look perfectly fine one day and gone the very next day.

ok .. here's the real deal ..

I NEVER wanted clams .. my friend closing his tank .. so ended up giving me his clam and chiller .. didn't really checked the condition before getting it though .. but after I closely monitor the clam and looking at the picts posted here (the maximas??) .. when the clam open up .. it's sealed up to the mantle with very nice patterns in the middle ..

mine is just white where the hole is .. and progressively becomes blue as it nears the lip .. very nice deep purplish blue color ..

cityofangels - no known fish pecking it now (maroon, tangs, gobys, mandarin and 1 irritating damsel) .. stressed maybe from the change of environment ??

the hole you are talking about is probably call gasping....generally clams do that sometime especially if they are stress...in general after a day or 2 if they return to normal should be find...but if it last longer, then something might be causing it problem big time.....did you check the base of any parasites?
