Hi guys,

My chiller died so need to buy a new one, was wondering if an over sized chiller is actually more or less energy efficient and the reasons why.

I think it was talked about before some time back but I can't seem to find the thread.

Anyone remembers?

Thanks!

Ervine

energy efficient not too sure.....but lifespan tink better cause it not goin to be over werk.....but imo a size above is recommended la....no need too oversize la....

do take note all the contributing heat factors...n get a reliable chiller to save ur headache....

i actually got some advice from a fellow reefer who said that an oversized chiller might chill your water too quickly resulting in stress for the corals

In addition, because it chills so quickly the chiller tends to kick in more frequently and results in some spikes of some sorts which make ur electrical meter jump (i.e. money go down the drain)..

True?

My one hp outdoor chiller is oversided for my tank, but didn't see any problem. Electric bill is roughly the same before/after the change.

HMMmmm... but it should cool ur tank much faster than before yah? is it possible to cool TOO fast?

I think this will only happen when you have a 2ft or nano tank. With 3ft and above, I think is quite unlikely due to the tank volume. Also, unless you have a faulty thermostat, once the water reach the desire temperature, it should stay around that temperature.

Having said that, I do agree that it will be funny to super oversize the chiller.

hm.. is a 1/2HP for a 2.5ft considered super overkill?

mine is kind of oversized. im using a cl650 for an 18 inch cube. the chiller kicks in and out quite often. it cools the tank down really quick, but then the lights and pumps heat it up again.

i know that the chiller draws more power to start up, so its not very efficient for my tank.
