Will Algae Grown Cause Nitrate Increase?

My Nitrate level is in red. Which is the higest in the test kit. What should i do to decrease it. Has been leaving it alone for some time already as heard that that will cause the nitrate to go down.

Has lots of algae growing on the glass. Is that the cause? And what should i do to decrease algae growth?

Thanks for all the replies in advance.

To control algae you can introduce turbo snails(think still got some others which consume algae but not sure which specie), lawnmower blenny, emerald crab, hermit crab(can't remember which specie).

Nitrates can be reduced by:

- DSB

- Plenum System

- Dentritator(hope i got the spelling right)

- Refugium filled with macroalgae

Algae thrive in high nitrate, indirectly it means they feed on nitrate.

Having some is good .. . .

You might want to try planting some marco algae, but tangs etc will feed on them.

Reduce nitrate level by doing water changes....

R u cycling ur tank? 0-ammonia, 0-nitrite means it is ready but still need to do water changes to ensure introduction of LS would not be stressed...

do not be lasy n believe that nitrate will be like nitrite n ammonia which will decrease after a peak...

a nitrogen cycle starts from ammonia which is converted to nitrifying bacteria to nitrite then to nitrate aerobically....

nitrate can onli be reduce to nitogen n escape as gas after reducing by denitrifying bacteria anaerobically...

denitrifying bacteria thus onli exists in very low oxygen places... thus the need to hav DSB / plenum / berlin which works when the nitrifying bacteria do their job at a sand layer near to the the substrate surface n by diffusion down to the base of tank, oxygen is already used up n hence beyond this, bacteria there will done detrification....

An accumulation of nitrate will always be there if u do not hav a DSB/plenum or u hav a wrong filtration method which renders ur LR useless in doing reduction....

If u r having a relatively new tank, i must inform u that detrifying bacteria takes at least 4~6 mths to mature (sometimes longer than u expect).... so for now, the onli thing to do would be to do water changes, preferable 20% 2 weeks once.... :peace:

Algae needs both phosphates and nitrates to grow (both, not either).

Generally speaking, it is easier to remove phosphate than nitrates.

So the best and most efficient way to attack the growth of nuisance algae is to reduce the level of phosphate.
