Dear Guys,,,,,

need your advice on dosing of kalkwasser,,, just wanna find out whether do alot of you add kalk into ur top-up water???

is kalk supposed to be dosed direct into the sump on a daily basis or only for top-up for water???

From wat i understand the kalk is supposed to elevate the ph and at the same time replenish the calcium.

However, i am not sure whether it increase the calcium level or maintain the initial calcium level??

:whistle

I dose kalkwasser 3 times weekly depending on the water evaporation rate

Kalkwasser does elevate pH because it is an alkali and increases Ca levels if your tank does not have organisms to use up the calcium in the water

hi,,,

you dose based on your own judgement or you have some form of equipment for dosing???

currently for my top up,,,i add the brand Prime,, red bottle,, it has a sulphur smell, and tink its for de-chlorine, reduce ammonia etc... then leave over nite before using it as top up... :D

am using kalk as a top up. will dose acording to evaporation rate of your tank. I am have about 4 -6 litres a day using a kalk reactor. Hope this helps

bro,

actually kalk reactor is like those dosing pump??? or like the calcium reactor type??? so for you,,, 4-6l a day.. how much do you drip in??? :yeah:

bro,

any particular brand for the dosing pump??? :D

I'm using aquamedic ....but getting the new dosing pump from reefdepot.....both should work well given that you don't run them 24 hours a day.......

reason i'm using dosing pump is becuase IMO, with additional equipment like a water level controller gives you more point of failure.....

actually kalk reactor is just a container that mixes kalk with water.....you still need a dosing pump or water level controller to feed in and push out water to your tank....

for water level controller some model like the tunze water level controller already come with a pump, but for most other you need to buy pump seperately any small pump will do....some people even using a dosing pump with the water level controller.... :whistle

Do take note not to overdose kalk

IMO, if you want good Ca and kH levels, dose kalkwasser and run a CR at the same time

Using a dosing pump (small peristaltic pump, around S$150 to S$200 or so) is a good way to dose kalk. Work out your evaporation rate and then dose the equiv volume of kalk.

Evaporation rate should be relatively constant, day to day, although it will change a bit.....

Real reefs don't have glass bottoms....(...think about it)

thanks guys for your advice...... one last point,,,,

my tank is a fowler tank...

my reason of gettin a kalk reactor is becos,,, i thought of getting a de-nitrator and using sulphur balls ... read some where that using sulphur balls can cause ph to go down..... thats why thought of using kalk reactor to buffer/push the ph back up...

pls correct me if i am wrong.....

havent got any equipment yet.....

1) Get a 1.5L bottle (drink the water in it :P), scew a hole abt 1/2 inch

from the base. try to get those hard bottle type.

2) buy a small green tap (~$1), or even an airtube with G clamp.

3) buy a tube of silicon (~$5)

4) Insert tap/tube into hole and silicon the surrounding ... let it cure

u have a dosing eq for less than 10$ :)

The green little tap or g-clamp is to control the drip

wah!!! :D but i not good in doing all this stuff...... better get the equipment professionally...

is it reali necessary to get a CA reactor if i am using a kalk reactor??? if i do not get,, is there any side effects,,,???

i am currently using the seachem PRIME to add into my top up water and leave overnite with a submersible pump inside ..... is it good for de-nitrite , getting rid of ammonia from water???

Nitrates are all soluble in water so what you are doing doesn't help in removing nitrates at all.

Anyway, a simple kalkwasser doser like the one mentioned is quite adequate unless you are dosing large amounts and lazy to mix the powder ;)

bro,,

i dun mind doing it... but concern on the dosing is pretty diy... i travel quite often.... so with the equipment .... i can leave it for at least a few days unattended....

so leaving water overnite simply removes the cholrine and ammonia??? :yeah:

kalk reactor with doing pump will do....IMO, its safer.....dosing pump can run dry....and pump water based on calulated evopration while requiring adjustment once in a while is safe because no danger of the float switch jamming or flauation in water level not due to evaporation....
