SRC Member May&Bruce Posted November 3, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted November 3, 2005 How to stop my two sand sifters from digging under my elegance and toppling it!!!! Quote Real reefs don't have glass bottoms....(...think about it)
SRC Member Flame-Tail Posted November 4, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted November 4, 2005 It's a little difficult as my friend had the same problem..kept digging under the clam till it toppled so only way was to shift the clam. But who knows? your sand sifter might get bored one day and decide to sift somewhere else.
SRC Member patrick123 Posted November 4, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted November 4, 2005 What kind of sand sifters are these? Are they goby or wrasse? I had a coris wrasse that keep turning my prata and brains over for food. Sometime, the action went unnoticed, and several days later, you find yourself a dead prata that cost 10 times more than the price of the wrasse. I'm glad I set a trap and removed it finally. PITA on all these sand sifters....won't be adding anymore in the future.

Is it effective in sifting the sand?

SRC Member cityofangels Posted November 4, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted November 4, 2005 My sand-sifter starfish can topple my clams by burrowing under the clams. Quite frustrating at times, to keep re-positioning the clams.

SRC Member 35Cents Posted November 4, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted November 4, 2005 Best sand-sifters I had tried is the sand dollar..... cheap, does it's job and best thing is that it will not bombard sand all over the freaking place nor it will distrub any corals. The catch is that it may not work on bigger grains of sand like grade 3 and above. Quote "Ah, Blackadder. Started talking to yourself, I see." SRC Member May&Bruce Posted November 6, 2005 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 6, 2005 Thanks guys....mine are the diamond spotted gobies - they are too efficient. SRC Member May&Bruce Posted November 6, 2005 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 6, 2005 now I am wondering if the also eat up all the good bacteria in the sand? I have a 5 foot tank and these two medium-szied gobies - they move huge piles of sand daily, to a depth of two inches. Sand is really clean, but what about all the goody bacteria and such that lives in the sand? Will that have disappeared??? SRC Member May&Bruce Posted November 7, 2005 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 7, 2005 So does anyone have an answer to my earlier question? If the sand sifters are far too efficient will they eat all the good bacteria in the sand too???? SRC Member Kelmen Posted November 7, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted November 7, 2005 there u go... What's is it? doesn't look like starfish, nor snail. Somekind of round-shaped sea-cuke? It loos like a "叉烧包" (Char Siew Pau) to me... do it perform surface sand-sifting, or digging too? is it hardy?
