Can i run my skimmer in the day and off at night?

hi there,

correct me if i'm wrong:

even the best skimmers are not able to skim stuff out all the time correct? ie... it'll skim a lot right after feeding and dosing or something like that. but after that... it doesn't skim that much anymore.... meaning.... there'll be bubbling.. but with nothing rising up the chamber... as there aren't enough nutrients for it to pull of anymore.

so. if i feed my LS early in the day and leave the skimmre on for the rest of the day, but switch it off at night. it shouldn't make much of a difference right? =)

oh yes, and for those of you who are thinking why am i even thinking about doing this, it is simply becoz i have my tank(2ft +2ft sump) in my room, and am a light sleeper.

using a aquac remora pro.

For me, my skimmer skims out product day and night

Skimmers not only help to remove DOC but also improve oxygen saturation in the water as well as degassing off gases.

In fact, a skimmer is said to help in the pH drop during the night by degassing off excess CO2

i would suggest more so you leave it on at night... helps to oxygenate the water...

i've got my refugium lights on 24/7 running at night. =) maybe i can run it at a reverse photo period to help balance pH too.

that can help balance the pH and the oxygen right? =)

It depends on what type of macroalgae you use

If you are using caulerpa, better run it 24/7

why not? i have a 2ft too and an Aqua C remora in my room too. switch off at nite , no harm to LS except tat the water contained in the skimmer may be oxygen-poor when u switch on in the morning and mix together with your tank water.

i had a 2x1x1 running a skimmer that is off at night......killed by fishes...seems that small tank doesn't hold much oxygen....so offing the skimmer at night causes the O2 level to drop too much killing of my fish....

but my sump will be running. think that should allow enough o2 into the tank. not as much as a skimmer of course. but with the macro algae too. hehe =)

it is best not to on and off ur skimmer, it is bcoz tat ur pump lifespan will be shorter and u will need to replace. juz imagine how much u spend if u hv to keep replacing ur pump every few months.

Provided your air source is from outside the house. Else if still from within the house, the CO2 level in the room will still be high at night and your PH will still drop.

You will be surprised.

I always thought that pH swings are minors until I bought a pH monitor.

If I will you, I will get a quieter skimmer if its in my bedroom so that I don't have to off my skimmer at night.

Firstly, the open seas have greater buffering due to its vast coverage and volume.

Secondly during the night the skimmer (Waves crashing onto the shore) of the open sea still works.

Another way is to aerate your water with air pump when you off your skimmer at night loh. But make sure you get the Rena air pump, they are quieter.
