Disturbing The Sandbed...

Hi,

Realise that when I disturb the sandbed, a lot of debris comes out from the sandbed. Sometimes I siphoned these debris when changing water, but the water becomes blur as a result. Someone once told me that it's not advisable to do this as the debris are not healthy for the fishes. Can someone confirm this statement? :thanks:

yeah... totally agree ... dun disturb it at all... u may cause unwanted parasites to emerge from hiding....

so.. u rather have parasites hiding in your sandbed than swimming in an open area where u can catch them from. If u have a Mature DSB messing it up below 1 inch deep will result in a release of toxic gas

hmmm will increase nitrates if u stir up the sandbed...

errr not sure if its nitrates or something else.. anyway, it's not advisable

Oh no

I've been stirring up the sand...because of the brown algae problem which is covering almost everthing.

Like spidey said, it is ok to disturb the top layer of your sandbed. I vacuum my sandbed regularly to clean up all the dirt, algae and etc.

Its good maintenance. However, don't try to vacuum all the way down to the lower regions of your sandbed.

sometimes i stir certain parts cos i read the detritus also food source for corals

Well basically its ok to siphon off the detritus on the sand. Here i m referring to the first 1 cm or so only lah. No pt stirring it all the way to the base.... doesnt really serve any purpose rite?
