Hi Fellow Reefers,

Juz got an order to take-off and will likely be flying off this coming FRIDAY. I Will not be able to make it this weekend. I understand the frustration of waiting and promise that collection will be available on the 12th(Sunday- whole day 7am to 9pm) & 13th(Monday-pre-arrange), since I'm onleave for that week.

Those who plan to use the Ulva(Sea Lettuce) for Nutrient Export, plse note that YOU WILL NEED TO PUCK AWAY THE ADDITIONAL GROWTH every week, else nutrient will release back to the water. Also note that Ulva need phosphate, and is key in removing phosphate in a close ecosystem. If you have a perfect system with ZERO(less than 20 microns/p?) phosphate you might have problem trying to grow a dense population of Ulva -> U will have to start with lower density which make better sense - BTW, all snails will come with a few strains of long Ulva for you to tryout in your Refug.

maxima: how come the sea lettuce will release the nutrients if we don't keep it in trim? won't the nutrients be used up by the lettuce as growth in the plant?

All algae release nutrient to the water at a certain point of time. When you trim the algae, you take away the nutrient that reside inside - especially the phosphate & nitrate & ammonia. This will free up more space for more algae growth and the process of nutrient export will be more efficient. The problem with a lot of other algae is that they release toxic back into the water, Ulva is safe in this aspect. But in some countries, like Korea where they suffer occasion Ulva boom that cover the whole inland shore and cause oxygen problem for the rest of the invert., fish or etc.. That's the reason Refug have a reverse lighting cycle to the main tank.

There's an article from the Taiwan University out on the net. that document a test run on Ulva growth base on phosphate concentration. It's interesting, base on the document, an increase in phosphate will result in a 4x faster growth in Ulva. The increase growth of Ulva is linear to the phosphate concentration. If the phosphate concentration is extremely low - our test kit is far inferior to test that, Ulva will have the slowest growth among most sea algae. It will be a good source of phosphate export - but also keep inmind that not all Refug has success with Ulva.....

I'll taking apart my own SPS tank and also my dad's clam tank. Will be building a new 200g SPS tank - waiting for delivery, using my old 90 SPS tank for Frag only cultivation and the 8ft fiber clam tank will make way for a built into the ground clam pond. Actually I've no idea if I have that much snails? Have not get a chance to check due to busy work schedule. Will advise before the collections.

Am I right to say that Ulva release nutrient when you don't trim them whereas other algae release nutrients when you trim them ? isn't it more risky then other aglae in that case ? Just want to find out more before changing my nutrient export method.
