hey brods! after using the product, there's a wierd smell emitting from the drip! izzit normal?  :pinch:  it's stinks!

cheers

U should stop using it otherwise disaster will happens as this is usually caused by a blockage resulting in no outflow from the unit. ;)

The smell is from Hydrogen Sulphide and is very corrosive and can cause damage to the pumps and plumbing fixtures. Likewise overdose result in the perish of all inhabitants in the tank.

To remove Hydrogen Sulphide from the tank water, install a activated carbon filter and replaced regularly if you doesn't has a carbon test kit (to test the absorption capability of the carbon in used)

Hope this info helps.

What you can do is to hasten the flow (the drips) to continuous flow and drain out this water, thereafter, test the nitrate on both the unit and the tank. Once it reaches equilibrium, adjust the flow back to drips (about 3-4 drips per sec) measure the effluent after several hours, this should be lower than the nitrate level in the tank. Monitor over the next few days.

I suspect you might have too slow a drip flow as your unit might have been matured. My experience is - once the denitrification unit is mature, the drips should be flowing, use the controller to adjust the flow to balance the denitrification according to your tanks' needs.

Cheers

  • 2 years later...

Hi, I have set up a DIY Sulphur Denitrator( One chamber Aquamedic sulphur, one chamber Aquamedic Calcium sand) 3 months ago. Yesterday I added one more set due to my current SD really can't bring down my NO3.

I have reset my drip rate to 1-2drips/sec now and previously my drip rate is too slow(5-6sec/drip). My question now is i have 0.25ppm-0.5ppm reading of Nitrite(NO2) from my DIY SD outlet now!! Is that normal/ok?? Is this because of my SD not enough good bateria to handle it yet at this moment??Please advice..... Thanks...!!
