I use bioballs in sump but not ceramic rings. Tend to get better result with bioballs than other materials. Some LFS said bioballs is not suitable for marine tank, only for fresh water tank. But I have seen other marine LFS using bioballs for their tanks in the shops! Whatever the theory on bioballs, one thing for sure is they increase the surface area of water and improve air exchange.

Never use....

Tank seems fine without them so....

why put & clutter the tank !? :P

Got SB for bacteria to grow.

Ulva & chaeto to suck nitrate.

Lots of tiny transparent prawns to clean every

nook and crany for left over.

N 1 snail to clean rock & glass of algae.

:D Everything seems fine.

Bioballs, or any other non porous filter media ,by them self, did not contribut to Nitrate level elevations. It is bacteria metabolisam that do the job. If you put them as a media to increase the surface area for nitrification and on other side you have a good media for dentrification(good porous Live rock, refugia, comercial denitrtor) than you could be comfortable. It very funy how this media is acused for nitarte elevation :).
