PH Question..

Hi all,

When you add freshwater into the tank to top up the water level due to evaporation, won't the freshwater alter the PH level over some time?

Although you are adding very little freshwater and doesn't really affect the PH level, won't it still have an effect over a period time?

I know that crushed coral chips and sand help to increase the PH level, but how about BB tank with no liverocks?

there are buffering ion in ur saltwater to reduce the alteration of pH.

it will not divert too much for short term.

adding buffer in correct dosage will help.

did you treat your freshwater before adding? if not the ph level will be quite high and somehow will do a slight change the ph in your tank. and remember tap water contains chlorine which is not very good for saltwater tanks.

Buffering top-up water??

I dun do it for my case. Top-up water is really very little of water compare to the tank water, so dun expect it to swing very much, be concern more with the 25% or more water change.

H20 is PH 7, adding 25% to a PH 8.2, using direct proportion, PH will be 7.9, but it should be more abt 8.0 - 8.1. Salinity and other factors also contribute... Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite... 0.1 ph +- Top up water comes like a rain water to our tank. Evaporation will of course bring up the PH accordingly...

So I dun know why have PH that swing very much. I only can believe the swing is cause by additive dose but not water topup or change.
