nitrates is one of the biggest cause of disgusting algae breakouts. I've tried many means to keep it low but have never been able to reduce it to zero. I think many of us have tried germinating mangrove saplings.. It just crossed my mind that, why dont we put on coconut in the sump? after all the cocnut is supposed to fall off the tree, float on water and while doing so start germinating, sprouting roots and leaves and then when it reaches shore anchors and grow into a new tree. So if we put a coconut in the sump, like all plant matter will suck up what ever nutrients there are available la as it grows. Sounds ridiculous but you guys got to agree with me there's some logic in there right? hahahaha!

i don't think the coconut absorbs the nutrients from the water when its being transported ... i think the nutrients required for germinating comes from the coconut flesh/juice? maybe if u plant an adult coconut tree in your sump, might work. :P
