Wooden Rack?

Hi all

Just wondering, so far most pple who use wood custom make cabinets for their tanks. Has anyone tried doing a wooden rack instead, ie no doors or covers whatsoever. Can cut cost if done like that?

Of course,its better than cabinet in terms of ventilation.IMO,cabinet just looks better thats all.

so in this case you must check out the specs of the wooden rack....those at Ikea has a specified loading

I think it could be tougher than cabinet in some instances...some cabinet look nice outside because of all the formica...then inside all softboard

Most definately.We are talking about solid wood here and not plywood.A stand with 3 by 2 inch wooden support can withstand 300kg without problem.Of course,the type of wood use plays an important part.

A wooden stand is definitely cheaper than a cabinet but not as cheap as you might think.A chengai wood stand should cost more than $250 but it can last for many years.

You will have to consult a carpenter for that.Beware not to use low quality wood though.Those are worse than wrought iron stands.

if i'm not wrong, his big nice tank uses very strong wooden rack too....

Wooden racks should be ok. Some of the LFS use wooden racks too. Like R*b**n.

I would advise that you check the quality of the wood and do a bit of stress testing. (Try getting a couple of friends to stand on it). A marine tank with water and LRs and be very heavy.

btw, isn't it betta to go for stainless steel stand rather than having a good quality wooden rack in terms of cost n convenience?

I understand that stainless steel will still rust after some time. Furthermore, the cost may not be any lower than a wooden rack. IMO, perhaps wood is easier to 'decorate' compared to stainless steel.

IMO,a stainless steel stand looks better than wooden stands.
