For caulerpa, you can find it almost anywhere but shops do not bring in chaetomorpha so you can oly get them from reefers

And just a point to note that caulerpa is one of the most toxic macroalgae and the toxin it produces is said to retard coral growth

Furthermore, caulerpa can crash when it goes vegetative and releases all absorbed nutrients back into the system and cause a MAJOR tank crash

But if you tame me, we shall need each other.

To me, you will be unique in all the world.

To you, I shall be unique in all the world...

finally found the time to sit down and write about my refugium setup... something i didn't do all along....

For me,

basically... my concept is i wanted a more "natural" system.... trying to mimic the ocean (bad idea, REALLY!!)... so i went for a ultra deep DSB....

1 feet sand.... i was looking for the right macroalgae to do my nutrient export as well...

mangroves don't work as my refugium is still not big enough. YES TO ALL THOSE WHO WANTS TO USE MANGROVE AS NUTRIENT EXPORT. 1 metre cube fuge is still NOT ENOUGH. so please forget the idea.

my trusty LFS advised me to use Sea grass, as diabolous described, the kind that Dugong/Manatee eat one.

best part is that my fuge is exposed to natural sunlight... clam pond not advisable also due to blocking of sunlight by the grass and the subsequent explosion of other wierd algae.

the refugium has not been a complete success as my pipings from the tank to the refugium has been totally wrong.... too much elbows and too small pipe.... 25mm pipe... just one!!!

currently... my algae control is totally not there.... i got all funny kind and never seen before and unable to identify algae growing in my fuge now.... been rather busy at work... so not much maintenance and also photo taking...

one of the latest pics of the tank i have.....

tank on top is supposed to be an experiment on whether SPS do better under natural sunlight or MH...... result: MH! more constant sun.... singapore got wierd weather recently....

have torn down the experiment SPS tank....

in the case the caulerpa is not suitable for nutrients exporter, what kinda plant / setup would be the better choice ?

i'm planning to have a sump + refugium setup for my new tank .. but still thinking of better plants for the refugium to export the nutrients..

My refugium is still empty. Still thinking of what marco algae to put inside. I don't like the idea of running another light for the fuge cos it will heat up my already heated tank of 30 degrees.

Do all marcoalgae require light? Do red bamboo algae serve the same purpose as the other marco algae?

basically.... light is food for plants.... so if you dun feed the plants, as good as no plants.... so refugium no plants.... as good as no refugium.... so what for set up refugium???

if your tank is already heated to 30... i think its way time u do something about it..... fan or chiller..... or maybe ice-cubes??? ;)

yes..they need lights primary.. and also balance amount of iron / PO4 & NO3, lacking either of those and your microalgae MAY outgrow your macroalgae..
