loowk
Am using Calcium reactor, now dripping Calcium hydroxide to maintain Ph. Could Sodium hydroxide be used in place?? Please advice.
FuEl
Not recommended. The cellular balance of sodium and potassium ions are crucial for cell membrane functions and energy generation in cells. So if you dose sodium hydroxide, sodium ion concentration outside the cell will increase and disrupt this balance. Do note that marine fish do drink and excrete the salt. Imagine the amount of sodium the fish will have to excrete if you dose NaOH.. Ca(OH)2 is used as Ca can be taken up for coral/coralline growth. And each Ca ion will supply 2 OH- ions as compared to 1 OH- ion if you dose NaOH. Thus Ca(OH)2 is a stronger base and will help maintain pH better.
