irwana usually has some jerry cans at their shop. you can buy the new ones for $12, the used ones for $6-8 i think. youd be better off buying new ones from beach road market or like cirrus says, from the thieves market area near bugis, behind sim lim tower, raffles medical there.

its not as eco friendly i guess but i prefer buying in the bags they provide as jerry cans are really damn heavy, not just to carry back, but to pour out from after youve brought it home. i use an ice-box to store seawater- one bag fills it up full. so each time i open one bag, i replace about 500ml seawater every day or so as i skim very wet, and when my icebox thing is empty, i open another bag of water.

and ive tested the water from several batches that ive bought from irwana. kh is slightly low at about 7-8dkh, and ca about 360-380 usually, but thats easily adjustable. nitrates undetectable, and phosphates below 0.03ppm. thing is, my dad said he saw a tanker fill up its tanks with seawater at a canal at peak high tide near west coast besides his work area recently, so i think the lfs saying that their water is from bali, or southern islands is probably untrue. all the same, works well for me.

cheers all,

ian

ps: sorry to hijack your thread supremo, but have some questions on my mind as i'm planning to make a new tank to correct some of the flaws i made in designing my present tank, and wanted to know if anyone else is able to achieve good clean white sand continuously with a DSB. and also, if anyone has ever used ARM or other calcium reactor media (aragonite based) as substrate, or if anyone knows where i can find southdown sand which is silica free.

thank you

Sorry about all this NSW - Natural Sea Water - I used to cycle down to Punggol Beach - and just scoop sea water from the beach - the specific gravity is not ideal but the water is clean. This is very troublesome so now I just mix salt with tap water. But personally if I have a car, I would just go to seaside and scoop the water out - just find a clean spot to do it, then add a bit more salt to get the s.g. up to the required level. <_<

I know of this fella who works offshore. He can supply fellow reefers with New Sea Water. I was quoted $7 - $10 per 25L with a minimum order of 50L delivered directly to your door step. Per brand new Jerry Can is $9 if you do not have the standard 25L jerry can sold at the hardware shop.

My 2 cents worth of calculation - Approximately per packet is 8L = $1.50. Taking into consideration that 3 packets = Only 24L = $4.50. Then there is the wear & tear cost of the car running along Lorong Halus, car's petrol or cab fare for those without car & convenience ... I guess this is another alternative one can consider.

Fellow reefers who are interested, please pm me for his contact. Then again since he is only an individual with limited strength, over ordering will result in delayed delivery I suppose. So reefers please don't spoil market.

I think you've made an interesting typo error. :eyebrow:

New Water + Sea Water = New Sea Water? :P
