New BLV 14k lights too strong?

Hi all,

I am also trying the BLV14K 150W now.

Sad to say .... I think it is definitely yellowish ...........

Upon initial light up, it is yellow and after the complete light up it turns white

with a tinge of yellow. I had to turn on actinic to balance out the colour.

I had the coralvue 10k 150 before. In contast upon initial light up, it was blue.

Upon complete light up it was white with a tinge of blue.

I will give the BLV more time and report back the results on my corals.

But currently my corals seem to be loving the higher PAR of the BLV.

My LPS is definitely opening up more.

I was previously using the BLV 14000ºK 150W too... I find them a bit on the yellow side. Here's a pix.

The bulb is yellow for sure.

Definitely need actinic to balance ...... but my corals love the higher

PAR. They are blooming more now.

And I only turn on my 2x150 MH for 5 hours a day to

acclaimatise my mainly LSP corals...

when i switched from 2x150 MH (cheapo brand) 14k + 4x55 T5 ---> 2x250W (phoenix), i lost abt 500 bucks worth of LPS within 2-4wks - bleach first then die... i was told feeding with market prawn will help, but my tangs always stole from the corals. saw them bleach and die. sighzzz.

really a big heartache at that time..... those lps had been in my tank for many mths before i switched over to 2x250.

i just switched to using blv 10k 250w for a few hours, and all my corals start to curl and furl. its really much stronger than my existing 10k 250w coralvue bulb.

I realised the new batch has problem. Probably lack of UV coat.

It has nothing to do with shifting up for acclimatizing the new lights, as i have been changing it with 10k, 20k and 14k without much hazzle. No issues then until now.

These new batch sure warrant concerns for those BLV users. There are many reefers that i came to know are having the same problem.

Most of my montipora burnt and died. I threw many away, and furthermore, some acros tips are burnt. Now i revert to Hamilton 14K which is better although par value is not as high as BLV but at least now my sps are recovering.

the missing uv coating for the new batch of bulbs is definitely plausible, but im thinking, since most of us have uv glass for our mh, maybe its not just the additional uv thats affecting the corals.

but i have no idea what might be the cause

Most MH glass do have glass and they are mostly tempered. But i dont think they are UV coated. Not all MH glass comes with UV coated.

If my memory serve me well, previous BLV packaging comes with fully blue box unlike now with some colours. Previous box stated UV protected coat. Now i cant find it stated in the new box.

I just installed 2x BLV 150 watt 14000 kevin bulb couple of weeks back.

Seems alright so far, corals didn't bleach. Maybe cuz i don't have tt many corals in the first place. Perhaps existing owners who wanna change their bulb sld take note.
