Does Shrimp get ich?

hi kennethk,

i do not think that ich is able to infect shrimps. the thing is though, the cysts of carytocypton may be able to settle on the shells or carapaces of shrimps and crabs, or on the skeletons of corals without infecting them (same way they settle and incubate on the sandbed), waiting to hatch into the free swimming infective stage.

so it is possible that shrimps can be carriers of ich whilst never falling prey to ich.

cheers,

ian

hi there hammy. i think if youre quarantining your fish in a separate quarantine tank, you can just leave your shrimps in the display because you wont be medicating the display, and they wont be affected. Pls do not treat your shrimps with anti anti-ich formula as even though many of these things claim they are reef safe, many experiences have shown us that thye are not, so do be careful ya. as long as you leave your main system fishless, the ich will die off by the end of six wks even if there are inverts there as the free floating ciliates cannot find a host to infect and will die.
