It works for since the first day of the hobby since 2001. But need to know the combination of the media to use and of course the bigger canister the better. Regular maintenance every 2 month, i.e replacing the filter sponge.

Careful with canister that some are easier to maintain than the other.

though having a sump has its own advantages,I don't see any reason y a canister can't do a good job:) but of course be it canister or sump, proper care & maintaince must be carry out or even having the world most expensive system is useless

Nothing wrong with canisters as long as they are cleaned out and the wool and filtration medium replaced as needed. As they are meant to trap dirt, you should not rely it to house the bulk of your beneficial bacteria too much as you will be cleaning it regulary. Use liverock as your main biological filtration. The biological filtration provided by the canister should be only viewed as secondary.

Always something more important than fish.

It's quite sian to keep opening up the canister man..., then, find it hard to prime.. i use 2 of the Eheim Pro II canisters, with the priming thing? but it doesn't prime that easily?!! Maybe you can help! I thought at first cos i used a surface skimmer with it, but, it's still quite hard after i took it out... does hose length play a part? :( boohoo
