I hv done some readings on these for a few days on a foreign reef forums m n what i understand is that it can burn up the DOCs in the water n as a result, clean crystal clear water :D n also without proper use, can cause REEF MELT DOWN via ozone.

I feel like such a newbie(that is what i am now) reading most of these threads n my thought is that can any gurus out there can enlighten me up about these new gadget(that is to me :paiseh: ) the good n bad about these stuff/how to fixs it up(do i hv to mods my skimmer?) or better still for those who are presently using this, can share some experience?

n one more thing, can we discuss in a simplest english as possible cause sometime i couldnt understand what the hack these ang mohs talking about in theirs forums  ... me highest standard is just PSLE cert :paiseh:

:thanks:

Basically, an ozonizer has many advantages over its major disadvantage of overdosing.

Its advantages are: Clearer water due to reduced turbidity

Increased oxygen levels

Improved skimmer performance

Sterilising effects

Increases ORP levels

So far as I have used the enaly, I found the water to be much clearer and skimmer performance had improved and that helped in a way to solve my algal bloom after my sandbed removal.

In using ozone, you got to check whether your skimmer is ozone friendly and use ozone safe tubes. Another alternative is to use an ozone reactor but injecting ozone into the skimmer is the best way as the excess ozone can be degassed off and you have better skimmer performance too

tks blueheaven

can someone post some pics of a full set operational ozonizer n how it is connected to the skimmer?

i do understand that certain skimmers come with ozonizer fixture but how about others that are not? D.I.Y beckett for example....can i fix/mod one tooo? do the ozone cause damage to the skimmer?(considering that the beckett are made from thick acrylic)

:thanks:

i have few questions to ask as well...

1. how do you know if your skimmer is ozone friendly? I'm using h&s, is it ozone friendly?

2. does this ozone gadget cause any harm to humans? such as ozone leaking etc, esp if there's baby in the hse, is it harmless?

thanks and sorry to hitch a ride on this thread..

There's a thread on skimmers being ozone friendly

And ozone, being a strong oxidising agent, is very harmful to the body so please use carbon wherever ozone might escape

ok...u nedd to check whether hns do comes with this optional fixtures but i know that Deltec Protein skimmer hv it....

blueheaven, since u mention that it will improved skimmer performance, lets just say that im using a mid range deltec for eg model AP851. this skimmer may hv cost me around $1300 n im going fix an ozonizer which will cost me around $800...so total cost should be around $2100....my question is whether the performance of my upgrading will match the the quality skimming of an high end skimmers?

So if that the case, 6footers tanks(with maximum quantity of overload LS) or more can opts for this setup, instant of cracking the bank with much much more $$$ on high end skimmers....and not to mentions the cost of electric bills that could save :D

:thanks:

Ozonizers can be the Enaly which only costs $65 for the 200mg/h unit

You will also have to invest in a ORP controller to make sure you do not overdose

But for what you said, a Deltec + ozonizer would give you good skimmate. However, it cannot be compared with skimmers like the BK or RK2 as they are made differently. You will only be maximising the power of Deltec only

i am using deltec apf600 for my 3ft. i use ozonizer with ORP controller. right now my redox reading is 396. i have to clean my skimmer collection cup almost everyday becasue i make my skimmer skim wet but not too wet. the colour of my skimmate is coffee with milk brown type and very smelly. the only improvement i observe after using my ozone is that i hardly clean my tank wall. not as often as before. wtare clean. that's all.

my experience of using ozonizer:

at first i used my ozonizer without ORP. i switch it for at least 3-4 hours a day. i used my corals, softy as an indicator of whether i overdoes it. when they close up, than i know that i need to off ozonizer even though i only switch it on for an hour.

when i installed my ORP and let the prob stablize for 3 days without operate my ozonizer. the reading was 311. after that i set my ORP at 350. next following week 360. this week, i set it at 370. now the reading is stablize at 385-395 depend on my tank PH, feeding and the dirt of my skimmer collection cup. last 2 days, my OPR controller hardy switch on my ozonizer. all my fishes and sps are doing great :P

hi lobster, tks for sharing...clean water means good light penetration means good for thriving coral esp sps means one happy reefer! :P

:thanks:

actually the ORP reading helps me to detect whether there is anything wrong in my tank.

1. one of the day my ORP reading kept droping. so, i clean my skimmer collection cup. and than the reading pick up.

2. when i add some sps corals and the reading drop for a day. but the reading pick up again.

Currently using:

Enaly ozonizer (non-controlable) cost = $65

PH-OPR Controller (it is for PH or ORP control) cost = $150

now i am ordering Hailea Ozonizer (which is come with controllable output) = $75

reason, Enaly's output is 200-300mg/hr. not very comfortable for such a high output. take the measurement from my tank size (3ft), i only need ~50mg/hr. so, decided to get the Hailea Ozonizer. and it max. output is 100mg/hr.

i am getting the 2nd unit of PH-ORP controller (comes with the improved prob for this bulk order) for my CR unit. use it to monitor my tank PH and control CR PH :P

You mean your controller can control pH as well as ORP? That's cool!!!

no. this controller can only control either PH or ORP. not both. that's why i get another unit for my CR ;)

anyway, this PH-204 unit is a very good unit. it has a very good review in other forum. and i was told that this unit is OEMed by various European vendors who sell them under their own label.
