Most of you must have read the recent increase in fire cases due to aquarium. What can we do to prevent this from happening? Better be "kiasu" than sorry.

What I did:

1) Install a smoke alarm

2) Change extension cord/multiple plug to approved 3 pin type. Can't find any good quality 2 pin extension point. Loose contact on most 2 pin types may create heat and spark.

3) Tidy up the cables and extension point. Placed it above ground level.

4) Earthed the lights

5) Bought fire insurance (not preventive though, but to reduce losses and insured against legal suite for damages to neighbours)

Anyone knows the cause of those fire cases reported? Is it due to faulty filters/pumps? How? I heard all filtering systems now require approval. What other fire preventive measures can you think of?

3v|L,Sep 15 2003, 08:13 PM]wow u really invested to prevent a fire breakout

IMO don't get lousy and unreliable brands and keep electrical appliances away from splash   :fear:  :pinch:

That is all insurance about. Spend a little now to cover heavy potential losses. :P (I'm not an agent) :fear:

I'm still having a power point fit under my overflow box!!!

Really!! :o Is it a submersible (powerhead) or hang-on (place on the o/h filter) motor pump? Can a submersible pump caught fire?

No, only underwater flares & weilding equipment can burn in water.

If u see a powerhead burning in the water, do let me know & i'll avoid that brand.

Worst case senario: it will short out & electricute the tank.

The fires are from the overhead filters that are not really recommended for marine (cause it takes up precious space for lighting). Overhead filters can be bought at $18 or less...what do u expect? An eheim warranty?

You trade price for quality & QC.
