Beckett skimmer

I would like to share with all reefers a situation i experienced.

Before i install the 6 inch by 42 inch beckett skimmer, my tank temperature is maintained at a constant 28-29 degrees.

After installing the beckett skimmer, my tank temperature rises to 30 degrees!

Few points to consider:

1) Is it bcuz of the pump that generates the extra heat?

2) Is it bcuz of the friction of the water in the reaction chamber that generates the extra heat?

Its amazing that a beckett skimmer can increase your tank temperature by 1-2 degrees.

It is partly due to the high air volume injected to the water and that is air at a temperature of at least 30 deg C or higher. I have the same issue with my tank. The other option you can do is cool down the air before it goes it to the skimmer. That will help a lot.

hi, how do you cool down the air which enters the beckett skimmer?

The pros of running a beckett skimmer is prob the amount of heat it generates back into the tank, and the high wattage of the pump needed to run it.

Anyway this heat issue is insignificant for those who runs a chiller. However, those who have a fowlr tank/without chillers might be affected bcuz of an increase in temperature.

one option is to immersed a coil of air hose supplying the beckett in the aquarium water. It would be best if a heat exchanger type of air manifold where air is cooled down before being drawn to the hose. This would probably be an additional way of cooling the tank water via skimmer.
