what OS are you using? If Windows XP/2000, just right click on the folder/file and you should have this "security" tab where you just assign the appropriate permission to the IDs that can access.

coz on my laptop, there seems to be only one user available, and i think it'll be pretty often that my friends just take over my laptop and use it and at the same time, there are files that i don't want them to access, just in case they itchy finger...

haha... so how?

if you are the only user to the laptop then network sharing/security properties is of not much use.

I suggest you password protect your files (MS OFFICE files).. at home i often leave my computer on and my friends when visiting, their children always like to play with the computer... as such i password protect all my important personal and financial files (ie MS Excel, MS Word)..

simple does it ..

hi there, are you saying that only MSoffice stuff can be password protected? how about other files and folders? like photos?

that's my main concern. thanks!

Yes, MS Office files can be password protected...

As for FOLDERS and other files format (ie: jpeg, mpeg, etc) then you need third party software to set password. If you really have so much different format of files you need to protect.. the best is to password protect the at FOLDER level where you keep all your files in this folder.

FOLDER password protection s/w easily cost US$20-US$50 ... note: these s/w do have trail download you might want to try.. just search the web you will find lots of them.

Sometime by pure luck you might come across a FREE s/w also.. :D

p/s:

... why not keep the notebook away from your friend? don't let them even touch your laptop then you have no worries... and on the safe side... set password protected screen saver to keep unauthorised people away...

cannot lehz, in sch environment, its like that one. "can let me check my mail" "can let me browse the net for a while"

haha.... not very nice to reject mahz.... hmm... and i don't mind, i just don't want them browsing my stuff...

In that case, search the net for free folder password locking software..

try limbssg's suggestion ... "Folder Lock v5". I have not use this before, but you can search for it and explore its feature.
