Diatoms Turn Into Hair Like Stuff - Help

Hi GUys, I has a diatom explosion the last few days, and now I have 1 cm hair like stuff on my glass and substrate. Any idea what this might be and how I can get rid of it? Many Thanks

Hey welcome to the club. I have the exact same problem.

trying buying some snails to eat up the hair algae.

Can also try better nutrient export methods. They are what is feeding the algae growth.

It might go away by itself. if not, try to reduce phoshate and nitrate. Last resort is to black out your tank for a few days, but that might harm your corals...

Or buy snail, crab or even chemical from equarenature. Those from Sea chem that remove Silicate or phasphate

I thought snails don't eat hair algae? If you black out your tank, would your live rock start to die? (i mean the coralline algae and stuff)

snails do not eat hair algae....

they onli clear those diatoms on ur glass surface...

hi see my thread on cowrie snail, my 1X cowrie, 2Xturbo, 1X emerald crab, 1X lawnmower blenny have reduced my algae to minimal levels in just 2 days, my tank walls have only tiny spots of brown diatoms left, my LR have their hair algae and brown diatoms almost totally gone, my eden rotating PH has been cleaned too, even the rotating head itself. try it for yourself!
