Hi,

I know that keeping corals must have alot of lighting....but is chiller a must??

Saw a tank set up (i think is a 5x2x2 tank) with maily corals but no chiller was used.........

and also, at coral farm...their coral were kept at 30 degree temperature........

kind of puzzle me......

or it it becos of some type of coral are more adaptive to cold water n some can just do with higher temperature (like 30degree).

thanks for your advise n opinion on this issue.

Cheers

talked to one of the guys at coral farm yday....

depends on the corals... some corals that are natually found in deep dep places need cold water... however some corals that are most or less found near the surface of the water no need cold water to live....

kinda make sense to me... my 2 cents worth....

Most lps and softies can tolerate 28-29 temperature.

And their lighting requirement are such that you can also get away with using just PL lights or T5 lights. These two types of lights produce much less heat compared to a MH light.

However, to keep clams and sps, I recommend that you use MH lights, and to also keep the temperature below 27.

Hey i believe that this question has been ask many time.......... A chiller is not a must in a reef tank unless you using very strong lighting that give out lots of heat such as metal halide....... But even then if your temperature remain at ard 28- 29, you still need no need to use a chiller, btw if you find chiller expensie you can go for cheap AC/DC fan, they are able to reduce a tank by 1-2degree....... But you must bear in mind once you use the fan, water top up will be very regular and quick.................
