Micro Bubble Stopper - Beckett Skimmer

Hi All..

Just want to share with those that are troubled by micro bubble produced by beckett skimmer... here is my solution ...

(1) Coconut Squeezer bag - S$1.20

(2) Elbow joint and short pipe - S$1.20

Note: the elbow joint and short pipe is for connecting to the beckett skimmer's out-flow opening.

Total Micro Bubble Stopper System - S$2.40 ... :lol::lol:

connect the elbow with coconut squeezer to the out-flow opening of the beckett skimmer ... and system in action !! .... :lol:

Notice that all the micro bubbles are collected within the coconut squeezer bag and then form a huge big air balloon at the top of the bag...

pressure from that huge balloon will force air to escape at the top of the bag to the surface of the sump ...

See the bottom area of the sump .... very minimum micro bubbles..

did this before but only 1 problem with this bro... the bag traps dirt that's not removed by the skimmer.. needs maintanence... but other than that it's a good way to go...

can use a stocking too btw..

I am ok with the dirt trapping which probably will change the bag say ..... every one or two months maybe... will have to monitor.

not too sure about the stocking ... maybe too thin and tear easily ?? ... anyone try it before?

alternatively to socking, u might wanna try the mosquitoes/sandfly netting that u use to cover ur face in the army when u harbor near the banks

noted your feedback... will monitor and see ... if i really need to change the bag more than once a month than i think of ways to improve it .. :lol:

Thats exactly what happens for my case, except its like a matter of days... the skimmate gets pushed higher, resulting in difficult tuning and extremely wet skimmate. This is what I implemented to prevent microbubbles... I hope it'll work for you

Have you actually use this and it works? I have tried, and guess what. The flow was too fast, and the water come out from the pvc elbow.

I think for this to work, the straight pipe has to be quite long, or according to your diagram, the T-joint needs to connect to a long pipe. Otherwise, the bubble will still come out from the T-joint.

Got to watch it. if the sock is clog, your skimmer could backflow and flood your floor.

yes... have to watch out for this point.. :D

my collection cup out-flow's hose lead all the way to my bacony's drain... sekali my whole tank dry up .... :lol:

true ... looking at the diagram if the beckett out-flow is too rapid i think all the micro bubbles will still be forced down to the T joint and only a fraction of the bubbles actually channel to the elbow..

anyone try this method and work perfectly? then can tell us more about this setup..

Hiall, haven't really tried this before but was thinking of this before for my microbubbles from my drain pipe. the idea is to let the bubbles go up the surface first. Don;t know if it'll work though. Any comments are welcome.

This will work better but you need to ensure that the top level of the box is at the same level as the water surface so no water fall effects when the water flow from the box into the sump.

The box needs to be as large as possible.

The idea is to give time for the bubbles to float up to the surface.

The best way is still with a properly designed baffle system that is wide enough for the flow. Normally a down-up-down configuration works best, we're not talking abt a baffle wide of 1/2 or 1" but 3-4" per baffle.

Solution A.

Wool will restrict the flow eventually and lead to flooding of the collection cup.

Solution B.

Will work only if the "pipes" (with green arrow) is of sufficient size so the water flow rate thru it is slow giving sufficient time for the bubbles to rise and burst at the water surface.

At the end of the day, I think nothing beats a properly designed baffle system with at least 5 baffle plates. Actually, this baffle system can be a box sitting inside the sump and it should be a little higher than the water level in the sump. That should work.

My other problem is the splashing effect of the bubble and creating a lot of salt spray in the cabinet...... sigh...

Hi Bro madmac, mind to explain ur method is greater details. This micro bubble from Beckett is simply :angry:

I'm not sure if this cage method will work for in-sump skimmers as the outlet is submerge in water. However for out-sump models, it should work, (ok I'm only guessing here, as I don't know the science behind it)

As the water(together with the bubbles) escapes the outlet, it meets a higher outside pressure opening. This is because the joint connects to a wider opening, so the bubbles going out together with water loses its velocity. It collects at the top(because the cage has a cap-see pic). The bubbles join together forming larger bubbles which float. These larger bubbles escape because the joint btw the cage and the outlet opening is not tight(see the rubberband holding it up... the cage actually can blob up and down). The water escapes out.

I'll post a pic of the cage when I get home. HTH
