I`ve been checking out some pumps and i notice the pricing difference between Dymax and Eheim..i checked the flowrate and Eheim one is rated at 1200l/h while dymax is 4000l/h...but the price difference is huge..y is dis so?..issit because of the brand and country of origin?

Is Dymax reliable?

With regarding to flowrate, generally the more established companies will be prudent with their rating while the smaller companies will overstate their flow rate.

Flowrate is critical point of considerations besides price. But flowrate is not easily measured unless you have the proper equipment or when you run 2 pumps in your same set-up and physically see the flow generated. So smaller companies will tend inflate their flowrate to entice potential buyers.

I have used a very popular Taiwanese pumps that claims 4700l/hr but when I compare the flow to a German made pump which listed there flowrate at 3000l/hr. When I them as my return, both gave different flow and obviously I wasn't surprise that the german live up to its claims. ;)

Alvin,

I was told by Eheim during aquarama that it is not true. Eheim pumps are still made in Germany. And the reason why Eheim does not make pump more than 3400L/hr is because that will be more than 100w, and in Germany, any pump more than 100w will require special permit and approval process (at least that's what the eheim guy told me).

Siaokia,

To answer your question, it all depends on what you use the pump for. If you are using it for mission critical application (e.g. return pump, chiller pump, etc.), you better go with the germany made pump for the peace of mind. But if you are just using it for your UV light, or fluidized reactor, or top-up water, you can use the cheap china brand and if they stop working, throw them away.
