hi bros and sis,

i am currently reading up on anemones ... wanted to get 1

for my pair of percula clown fish :D

and i understand the pros :D and cons  of having anemone

in the tank, that's y i hope to make the correct selection at the

begining.

in your experience, which is the hardiest anemone? is it bulb/bubble-tip?

Is the long tentacle (with red base) anemone as hardy?

anemone keepers, can share some tips/experience on selection and care.

cheers

Bubble-tips are one of the easiest species..however you still have to choose a healthy specimen. The anemones with the red base seem impossible to keep alive for any period of time. Percula clowns don't use this species as hosts in the wild, the anemones they associate with include the bubble-tip anemone.

General rule...

1) Good lighting. T5 is minimum.

2) Good water quality that suits even SPS.

3) No powerheads in your tank.

Always something more important than fish.

thanks bros for the replies :P

hmm ... bubble-tip isnt one of the natural host anemone for percula right?

so ur percula (i assume u have :P) actully dont mind the bubble-tip?

3) No powerheads in your tank.

i had a tunze in the tank :( ... thot anemone like moderate - strong

water movement, not directed at them.

man .. :thanks: this is good stuff ...

BTW .. if i opt out of anemone ... what is a good replacement? LPS?

cheers

they won't like direct current, but still got to have good in-direct current cos they need alot of oxygenated water carried to them.

Ane is invertebrates so its rather different from LPS. maybe soft corals like xenia, star polpys. Clowns love to mingle in there too

Can't remember if bubble-tip anemones are natural hosts for perculas. Best is to check dive books. I do remember that maroon clowns and clarkii clowns have bubble-tips as hosts naturally.

Any form of powerhead, no matter how weak or strong..is a danger. Anemones are infamous for seeking out powerheads sooner or later.

If you opt out of anemones and leave your clowns without hosts, they will do just as well if not better. Clownfish spend energy daily just to prevent themselves from being stung by the host anemone. But if you want a host for them just for aesthetics, I would'nt recommend any type of LPS...sooner or later they will get stressed or damaged. Leather corals might work.

Always something more important than fish.

hmm ... from one of the text ... seems not a good choice ...

S. haddoni anemones are especially notorious for eating anything

and everything that comes in contact with their ###### disk – including

crabs, snails, sea urchins and shrimp. Generally, if an anemone can eat

something, it probably will.

harddoni? they definately needs good lightings and they can eat alot and grow alot. If you dun want to start loosing your fishes, then they are not a good choice.

I was suspecting some ppl mistook the other kind, which is Stichodactyla gigantea. those are impossible to keep alive for long. If I am correct its the one you find baking under the sun at Check Jawa.

the large bulk of the carpet here are Harddoni

I was keepin a Harddoni for a few months til it decided to ambush my fishes. Sold it to another reefer who feedback that it was still doing very well now :D

you stand a good chance of a false percula with it.

As with all ane, good water parameter is essential

hope it helps

finish reading the pdf  good source of info ...

As with all ane, good water parameter is essential

i believe i can keep rest of the water parameters good and constant,

except nitrate (at abt 10-15). juz couldnt seems to bring it down to

near 0 ...

anyway, after all the reading, will stay away from ane for a while

until i'm more comfortable ...

again ... thanks bros for the replies ...

cheers
