keeping yellow head jawfish w/o sand bed

Recommended Posts

The fish will eventually die of stress without sand as these are very timid fish by nature. They will probably freak out when you approach the tank and they have no where to hide themselves from view. Even a little sand will make them feel secure compared to no sand at all. I've kept mine with a shallow sand bed..less than 1.5 inch of sand. It was confident enough to swim to the other end of the tank (4ft) just to pick up objects to decorate/reinforce the burrow. Then again it was the biggest fish in the tank.

You don't have to have a full deep sand bed for your whole tank. Just give it sand at the place where you choose to release it. Construct an artificial burrow for it halfway. A good idea is placing a piece on rock on a deep pile of sand in a corner. Excavate a little and when there's a hole big enough for the fish to go in, release the fish there. It should stay and reinforce the burrow by itself. You'll need different sized coral sand..ranging from grade 0-3 for it to help stabilize the burrow. Place these beforehand near the burrow entrance and the fish should do the rest. :)

Always something more important than fish.

Ty all for the comment, I guess I gotta give it a miss though I love this fish so much. I have kept twice, once jump out of tank become salted fish, second jump into overflow compartment with filter floss, end up barbecue by MH :cry2:

You could try a tupperware of sand. Have'nt tried this myself..but at least it contains the sand somewhere. :)

Fuel, If i put a small container eg. 3 X 3 X 3cm, do u think it works ? i dun wan to put a big container for it lar, it will defeat the purpose of BB tank.

Bro,

3x3x3cm is too small lah.

Maybe an ice cream tub might work. There is this guy is RC running BB but put a tub of sand at the back of his tank for his wrasses to sleep at night, and he has a lot of wrasses
