SRC Member beaver Posted August 10, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted August 10, 2005 Hi Reefers, Is that true? Will salinity increase due to addition of a chiller? If so, why? I understand its not due to evaporation. Thanks,

SRC Member Lester Posted August 10, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted August 10, 2005 yap i agree ... without the chiller water will evaporate at a much faster rate when using fan to cool ur tank... which means u lose water fater and ur salinity will be affect greater... SRC Member Kelmen Posted August 15, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted August 15, 2005 If I'm not mistaken, its not really "affecting" salinity, although the salinity reading will be different with different temperature. I think there's a scale or reading to properly read the salinity according to a standard temperature. So, if you get a reading in colder water, you must refer the chart to read the salinity in standard temperature. That's why we usually let the water drops on the refractrometer rest few seconds\minutes so that it adjust to room temperature (probably not the standard one too) for reading. Have to chk with the book later...
SRC Member Reefbum Posted August 18, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted August 18, 2005 Yup agreed that temperature will give different reading of salinity coz water volume dependant on temperature.Difference is neglible though unless huge change in temperature.
