Tink e behaviour of my newly added clown fish really puzzles me!!! :yeah:

My tank had juz completed cycling and its e first fish i added. The clown fish always swims near e top of the water at one corner of the tank and does not moves around.... e same thing oso applies for my cleaner shrimp which juz molted ('stone-ing' at one corner)

izit becos:

1) high level of nitrates

2) Temp.?

3) it likes e strong current created by e outflow pipe

4) Or its simply unfamiliar in a new environment

Pls advise.

hi there diablos,

i cant really be sure what the problem is with your clownfish, but i honestly think its due to incomplete cycling, and too high a level of nitrates. shrimps are good indicators of water quality because they're more sensitive to nitrite and nitrate levels in the water, and they'll start to stand in the middle of the sandbed and not move too much when nitrates get too high, whereas when tank parameters are good, they're be perched on rocks or coral and moving quite constantly.

fish swimming near the surface too is probably a sign of nitrates, though that could also be due to a swim bladder problem, for example, air in the scales, or swim bladder of the fish that creates bouyancy problems.

we cant be sure though so best way is to check your nitrate levels with a testkit. perhaps the issue may not even be nitrates but nitrites that have not been converted to nitrates yet due to incomplete cycling so checking nitrites too will help.

cheers,

ian

Hi Diablos,

strong likelihood ur nitrate is too high. how long have u cycled ur tank?

recommended 1 mth or more for proper cycling process.

its best to get good testkits to check ur parameters, Salifert etc.

check ur ammonia, nitrite, nitrate etc

to save ur heartache, $$ stop stocking up first. test ur water, stable leow thn stock up.... patience leads to success in our hobby :D

All the best :D
