Sump equipment placement

I have a sump that only has two large compartments. I would like to create a refugium and had the following questions:-

1. Can I house the return pump in the same compartment as the refugium or would it get clogged up etc?

2. If the input of the skimmer is from the overflow, should the output of the skimmer be directed into the refuigium or should it be directed back into the same compartment to reduce bubbles?

Thanks

what skimmer are you using?

you can use eggcrate to make a stand for the return. Check out acidjazz tank thread.

bro, i used to place the needle wheel pump for the macro on top of an eggcrate. However, i have already changed to a beckett. :)

As i was looking thru the tanks in reefcentral, i realise their sumps is almost half their main tank's capacity. They can have two fiber glasses of live rocks just for filtration. Quite impressed by it.

Its best to have dedicated compartments to each function.

I would suggest separate the refugium and return section. As whether it will get clog, its up how you setup it up. Refugium is a very general term.

As for skimmer outlet, its good to have it pour to next section.

But in practical, its best to have the skimmer water surface agitated. Else gunk will build up. So if skimmer have 2 outlets, 1 go next, the other used as surface breaker.

Ozy, what if I placed the pump next to the return pipe from the main tank. Won't the pump suck in most of the water and the beckett can extract all of the DOC stuff? Shouldn't that be better?

The pump sld be place in the 1st compartment. Anyway our sump tank aint tt big, first or last doesnt make so much of a difference.
