Hi Rocks,

DO you have a picture to show me how you do it? Sorry I am new to DIY pipe. For my 3ft is now using cansiter filter to run it. Btw wat is the HP for the pump to run the water?

Don't have pics with me.. and it never cross my mind to take pics while i am doing my standpipes. The pics in the website is a very good example.

I can only take some pics of my durso standpipe already in use in my overflow if you want...

what do you mean by "Btw wat is the HP for the pump to run the water?" if you are talking about return pump flow rate, I am using a RIO 32HF (8000 litre/hours) on my 3 feet tank.

CHEERS!

Hi

when you say "HP" you mean Horse Power har? pumps are usually rated in flow rate (ie: litre per hour, gallon per hour, etc). So like i say i am using a 8000 litre/hour RIO32HF pump.

To roughy guage what kind of return pump to use, you need to ask yourself a few questions:

These are the questions that I asked myself when I am deciding what return pump to use...

(1) What size are your piping?

basically you need to know whether can your system handle the high flow rate of a return pump.

(2) Do your over flow compartment have enough buffer space to handle the water exchange between the main tank and the sump tank?

(3) What is the head loss of your return pump going to be?

(4) What kind of turn-over you want to achieve?

Other reefers might have more details considerations for you when deciding a return pump to use...

CHEERS!

p/s: will try take some pics tonight..

Actually to get this overflow pipe works, you need to consider few things:

1. Pipe size, the larger, the higher the flow it can handle. 1.5" dia and above would be good.

2. The height difference between your tank water level and the "T-section" of the overflow pipe outside of the tank. The larger the height difference, the stronger the siphoning power, and hence higher flow.

For the skimmer size, it's better to use a larger diameter ones. I have made one with ~5" in diameter for my current set-up. Will try to post it in the DIY forum tonight, take a look to have some idea.

I think i explained how the physical dimension of the over-flow pipe affects the maximum flow capacity of the overflow pipe in the post mentioned above, please read through and you should be able to find out the answer.

For fast and easy solution, get it from bro alien07 ;)

Btw, this thread is suppose to be in DIY forum instead of buy-sell forum :fear:
