how to migrant from old to new tank

I have a 3ft tank for 2 yrs++, now I need to upgrade to

4 ft. What should I do...

Do I need to setup everything again....??

What abt sand....

Just done so... almost killed me..

If you working...take a long, long weekends...if study, work on before 9 August, at least got more time...

If you are just migrating and not having to refilled the old position...my suggestion is to get new sand, as the old one will have too much toxins. Filled the new tank with old water + New Salt water and old LR.

This will reduce the cycling period (maybe 2-3 week).

the LS will still have to go thru the acclimatizing ritual like when you just first got them. Be very cautious of skunk cleaner shrimp if you have any, i lost one of them in a hurry.

you can use the old sand to seed the new ones.

if you can loan a blue tub that will be very useful.

Oh yes, forgot...skunk cleaner shrimp, I lost 3 during the migration

Have them for 6 mths, molted many times, grow till very big and they died...

My initial plan is :

1. get use sand(maybe LR too) from some1 and wash

2. pour all into the new tank.

3. fill up half of the tank with new salt water.

4. put a power head to cycle the tank for a month or 2.

5. start to transfer my LR, cycle another week

6. transfer the rest of the LS over.

is this sound ok??

That's the best, I think your LS will be happy...

Hi, unless you have a quarantine tank or another tank. . get rid of all ur LS n corals first, the likelihood they wld survive thru migration is very low, especially without the presence of a chiller. (assuming u are using one now)

Replace half the old sand with new ones and cycle the tank accordingly. .

bro. . u are the man la. . 7 feet tank. .

Most or all lfs prob wun hold ur ls or corals bcuz they dun wan the responsibility. . i think u have a better chance putting all ur Ls/corals in another reefer's house. . but 5 ft of corals is no joke either. .

i only house a stingray, a bamboo shark n a trigger in the 3.5x2.5x2.5 ft tank. . yea sld have space. but i stay pasir ris. . best get some reefer who stay near u to longbang ur ls.

I would go for new LS unless you have real gems to keep.In fact giving or selling LS away increases their chance to survive the transfer.

hav space on top of tank? if separate ls into few floating buckets in old tank 4 few days b4 transferring 2 new tank, but stil inside same bucket afte transfer. may b wait like 1 week den can release out from bucket. so ls not so stressed inside de new tank.

I migrated in 1.5 weeks. No visible damage to LS.

How I did it?

1. Set up the new tank while the old is still running. Fill with new water and new sand.

2. Let the water cycle, and transfer a few pieces of LRs from the old to new tank.

3. Seed your new sand with some sand from your old tank.

4. Transfer some old filter media from your old to new tank. This should jump start the cycle and at the same time introduce bacteria to your new tank. The LRs and sand also help.

5. Depending on the size of your tank, transfer about 5% of the water between the old and new tank, daily. This serve to equalize the water parameters between the old and new tank. Also introduce bacteria in the old water.

6. Transfer your LRs over a few pieces at a time.

7. At the end of 1.5 to 2 weeks, test your water parameters, it should be ready for your transfer.

8. Move all LRs over and aquascape.

9. Move your corals and inverts.

10. Last but not least, catch and transfer your fast swimming fishes.

Worked for me. You can give it a try.
