Hi guys,

how do you stop the hmmm......ing sound from the pump Rio32 which was place inside the sump. The sound could be heard even the cabinet doors are closed.

you could snip off part of the return pipe near the pump and put a short length of rubber hose in between to absorb the pump vibration and also place small rubber mat where the pump sits.

Vibration is usually caused by back pressure or high head.

Flow pumps such as Rio are not build to withstand high head or back pressure.

High head or back pressure is cause by:

1) Elbows

2) Reducers

3) T joints

4) Distance between the pump to the outlet

5) Other filtration devices

In a high head or back pressured environment, the pump will not gives you the maximum flow you wanted.

Long term usage of the pump in a high head or back pressured environment will generate heat and will ceased the impellor without any warning.

In order to reduce the vibration you can either reduce the above or change the pump to one with high head rating or even pressure rated pumps.

I have previously used the 20hf to run my return and have the same problem, when I realized that the flow is getting slower and the pump is vibrating more.

I changed to the Aquabee 3000 supposedly have lower flow by higher head compared to the 20hf. After I changed, I have enjoy higher flow without vibration.

But ur rio20 doesnt generate a single sound so far. .

Thanks, Guys for sharing. My family members were very annoyed by the hmmm...ing sound. Got hold of some sponge and place under the Rio32. It does reduced the sound but not totally all. But the heat issued are approaching, have to get a chiller fast

For example the Rio32 will deliver 7300l/hr with 1ft of head but will drop to 5700l/hr if subjected to 4ft of head (As reflected from this Site).

This is excluding elbows or T offs.

My Personal experience with Rio20 which supposed to deliver 4900l/hr but when subjected to 3ft and 2 elbows, it deliver barely 2000l/hr of flow.
