tivoli
My cyano grows only in my refugium which I dunno why. I just scrap it out and off .... these guys I think are bacteria and it will spread one ... for me I just need to use cotton wool to scrap them off once in a while. SRC Member zephyros Posted November 13, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted November 13, 2005 i had diatoms 1st, but since changing to DI water, the diatoms had "disappear" ... but out came cyano ... understand that cyano is one of the "new" tank syndom ... and will go away when tank mature ... hence not doing much abt it, except for removing the cyano-ed sand when it turns too ugly. the cyano only grows on my sandbed but not on the LR or glass .. wonder y so ? SRC Member Quas111 Posted January 1, 2014 SRC Member Share Posted January 1, 2014 I have a very very bad cyano problem due to new tank syndrome now. At its worst the cyano carpet was at least 1 cm thick. Currently turning off lights but there seems to be a thin layer which doesn't one to come off
veliferium
I have a very very bad cyano problem due to new tank syndrome now. At its worst the cyano carpet was at least 1 cm thick. Currently turning off lights but there seems to be a thin layer which doesn't one to come off Almost wiinning the battle with cyano due to new tank syndrome.(they come in ~4th month mark for me) Adjustments I made to combat it includes: Reduced photoperiod. Weekly water changes. Changing from dry to wet skimming. Bi-weekly changing of filter-socks to eliminate detritus buildup in the sock Sucking out the cyano layers during water changes. Lastly, have a reliable CUC:) Do bear in mind that cyano is a bacteria and not an algae, therefore, there are recommendations to use antibiotics to combat it (Maracyn/Erythromycin). However, when using such antibiotics, one gotta bear in mind that you might be killing off some other bacteria as well. I'd suggest it as a last resort or not at all;)
