If someone could help me on how I could get the best lighting out of the combo of Iwasakis and Radiums, I would be interested....

Like the setup of ... Iwasaki / Radium / Iwasaki ..... or

Radium / Iwasaki / Radium.....

Which would give me better colours......

and os course excellent PAR.......

Cos the way I place my lamps would determine how many Radiums I need...

Phang,

250W Radium is very blue compared to its 400W counterpart.

Osram/Radium 20,000 K Lamps

Figure 3 shows the spectral distribution of the various 20,000 K Osram/Radium lamps tested, and Table V presents the PPFD. Table VI presents the drop in PPFD output when compared to new lamps. Here again, one of the lamps at 6500 hours of life seems to be an outlier (an anomaly). As seen from the data, these lamps tend to lose their output at a much higher rate compared to the 6500 and 10,000 K lamps. Year-old lamps had lost about 40 to 50 percent of their intensity. Unlike most of the other lamps, these lamps show an almost uniform reduction in intensity across the range.

Just good to know, but not a serious problem for you Iwasaki users. B) Too bright!

Hon,

All you need to do is change the socket and you can use E40 SE bulbs.

Well, if High PAR is what you are looking for opposed to looks......

Seen some pics posted in RC, seems like the combo of Rad/Iwa/Rad brings out the best looks......

Hmmmm wonder how a combo of Iwa/Rad/Iwa looks like???

Don't touch the Geisemann! :o

Just want to remind you guys that those people on RC who run Iwasaki and Radiums are all on 400W bulbs and the Radiums are overdriven by 430W ballast to make them bluish white. In reality, Radiums are manufactured as blue bulbs. The 250W bulbs don't behave the same way and are not popular on RC. If the colour difference is too great they will give the banding effect.

Ushio 10000K on right and Blueline on left. I have been informed that Radiums when not overdriven can be this blue.

Then I will trust your eye! B)

When I asked about this at RC I got pretty negative replies. I think robe asked about 250W Radiums on RC too.

I've got spare 250W ballasts and bulbs lying around so I thought I'll build it into my hood, but problem is that I've conveniently ran out of space. I'm extremely interested in Radiums too.

Hi Tanzy

I have seen robe tank, he has 1 radium and the others iwasaki. It does not look so blue as your pic. More of a bluish white colour.

Morgan,

Is the Radium ran on the ballast he recommended you to ....???

Cos the Radium causing the tank to look blue is something that bothers me....

If its as you said, Radiums giving bluish white light, than I would like to have a bulb.....

Phang,

This is the only picture of a tank running Iwasaki and Radium without banding patterns, I have seen so far.

The bulbs are Saki/Rad/Saki/Rad. Very nice colour.

If it is the middle you are talking about then it is due to the centre brace I think.

Yap Tanzy, saw her post at RC....

I think the previous post on the difference in Rad and Iwa/Rad is a much better choice for me.....

The blue in this pic still bothers me....

Hmmm ... wonder if I go with a Iwa/Rad/Iwa combo.....would that get me the desired colours....???

Robe,

$70 for 400Ws????

or all bulbs won't cost more than $70....

If that is too blue for you then why bother mixing the bulbs?

Just get 3 x 250W AB! ;) Makes life simple.

Great!!!! but what is a AB?????

and where do I get them here???

Price ?????

Anyway, the reason I'm going for Iwa is simply the high PAR that I want for my tank.... thought of Radiums because getting too many Actinics to balance the yellow out is a little troublesome.....

Phang,

AB = Aqualine Buchke, I don't know where to get them locally in Singapore, but I know they are available in the US and Germany through mail order.

Rich Durso uses 3 x 250W AB and his tank looks gorgeous.

Robe's right, like we discussed before in another photography thread about the subjectivity of colours. PAR or PPFD are absolute data but blueness of a bulb is only relative to another bulb.
