I do not recommend a 6 inch deep sand bed as it will definately create a totally anaerobic regoin. Read my article on sandbeds to understand more.

And regarding macroalgae, caulerpa is good but requires 24hr lighting and regular pruning to keep it from becoming vegetative. More reefers are changing to using chaetomorpha instead as it is much more stable than caulerpa :P

But if you tame me, we shall need each other.

So if we use chaetomorpha, what is the amount of time for lights on and should it be reverse daylight photosynthesis?

Its recommended to have lights for 12hrs and would be better if you have it on reverse :D

where do i get chaetomorpha ? can i have caulerpa and chaetomorpha mixed in the refugium? and with say 12 hours of lights?

other than macroalgae in the refugium with DSB .. what else you reefers put in the refugium? any live stock of any kind?

CHEERS!

Firstly, you can only get chaeto from reefers who have them

I do not recommend growing caulerpa with 12 hours of light and risk it turning vegetative.

I do have a sump which is my refugium, MSB, frag growout and hospital area

If you can maintain it well, a refugium provides a a steady supply of natural food like pods and shrimps and the macroalgae and sandbed tackles the nutrients in your system. And you can also nurse injured corals and fishes there

In other words, its the caulerpa turning asexual

When they do that, they pollute the water with their gametes and worse still, it results in massive die-off, releases toxins and nutrients. That's why you see ppl having their tank crash because of caulerpa :(

Wait wait, I'm rather confused by this sexual or asexual thing.... :D

Can I rephrase it so I can understand better - if the caulerpa does not have 24hrs of lights, it will reproduce and causing toxin to be produce in the tank or refugium? Is it?

Generally yes. And it comes with a package of free gametes and nutrients :P
