Care for hydrocoral?

My itchy backside strikes back and I bought a purple Fire Lace Coral (stylaster). Found out that it is not even a hard coral but a closer to jellyfish!! It has little pin-like feelers that will sting and cause a burning sensation. Now I house it in my Mixed reef tank shaded by my plating monti.

I've read some place that it is not photosynthetic and needs floating nutrient to survive and poor rate of survival in tank, thus high flow. Yet some books say light is ok for them and some people say low current. Anyone with experience?

Hope this is not my first and last Lace coral? :pinch:

I think (marine) therefore I am

hi there chris, could you pls tell me where you bought this lace coral specimen? ive been looking for one for a long time now and would love to get one too. they occur in local waters as my dad pulled up a fragment with his hook whilst fishing once. from my understanding i think they are primarily photosynthetic, feeding only in supplementation as its usually found in light exposed areas and reef fronts. perhaps you could try to ascertain that by comparing its small polyp extension in light and in shade?

some really good articles on lace corals if you havent checked them out ya. hope you find them useful.
