Got N03 problem in 2feet tank... use salifert testkit... its max.. more than 100ppm.. but N02 is ok... currently got 2 tangs, one very fierce fire nemo, 3 damsels, 1 blenny, 1 goby + 1 anthia in tank... still doing fine...

Done water change biweekly for 2 mths... help a bit only... going to change water these 2 days again...

Just want to know u all brothers opinions regarding high N03 in FOWLR system... and at how high the No3 conc, will it kill my precious fishes??

:thanks:

well its suprisingly ur fishes are doing fine... 2 possibilties

1. Test Kit defect or testing done wrongly.

2. Too heavily Stocked.. ( we need to know ur 2ft system)

- u using a overflow?

-Whats in ur sump tank?? coral chip? ceremic rings?

-How much u feed per day?

- etc etc

High NO3 is dangerous for fishes they will not really die on the spot.. i believe they will contract some kind of dieseas and die from that..watch out for cloudy eyes, itch, fin rot.

actually high NO3 and PO4, ur fish will not died. they just suffer...

normally, max NO3 for FOWLR is at 50ppm. maybe u can change ur water level 20% per day until ur level decrease to 20ppm.

But first, make sure ur testkit is not faulty.

how about try AZero NO3?

Hope it's help.....

No sign of itch... guess my fishes got used to the high N03 in the tank... got to monitor my goby and anthia closely as they are new in my tank... I think my N03 is very very high previously... cos of my poor husbandry.. seldom change water for 1.5 years.. only start changing recent 2 mths..

My system info...:

Overflow filter system (stacked..that means double box)..

1st compartment of cotton wool and Aquapharm pureII,

2nd compartment is coral chips and 2 small live rock,

3rd compartment is biohome, coral chips,

4th compartment is seachem matrix plus coral chips..

I just upgrade from air stone skimmer to macro needlewheel AS100 skimmer.

Just use a eden 228 wavemake.. about 2-3 weeks.

Please share with me yr opinions. :thanks:

My suggestion for immediate action:

Overflow filter system (stacked..that means double box)..

1st compartment of cotton wool and Aquapharm pureII,

> Clean the cotton wool or change new one if its dirty

2nd compartment is coral chips and 2 small live rock,

> Removed the Coral Chips -> trap dentris and become Nitrate Factory, do a search on Coral Chip and you will find a lot of info.

just my 2 cents....

Sorry, forgot to include that i put one small bag of Rowa-Phos in my filter compartment also... my filter wool, i often change to new one... every few days.. after not changing them for a year.. have this stupid idea that removing and changing to new cotton wool will deplete the bacteria in system...

Just got enlightened a few mths back by a helpful reefer in the forum...

Will coral chips really contribute so much to nitrate?? i thought its gd in buffering the pH and kH in water?? Will sudden removal of coral chips cause a spike in NO2 thus killing my fishes??

yup remove the coral chips gradually... not all at once

if it is not possible, put ur chips in a mesh and shake it twice daily to remove the detrius trapped..

Replace ur coral chips with big live rocks... (big live rocks works better than small ones in nitrification

add a tea spoon of sugar daily. I managed to reduce my nitrate level from 50 ppm to 5 ppm in 3 days

brother, heard of this method... but afraid that it may cause fish casualty... so i still dare not try on my 2 feet tank.. yest just change my tank water again... less than 2 weeks from my previous change... N03 still high... less than 100ppm but more than 50ppm... should be abt 75ppm from what i gauge from the salifert testkit... :(

Can any bro kindlt enlighten me why coral chips k become a nitrate factory...?? I saw a quite a few LFS using lots of coral chips in their sump system.... Btw if i keep the coral chips clean and free of dirt..would it solve the problem of it becoming nitrate factory??- :thanks::thanks:

coral chips will become nitrate factory...

firstly...it discharge some coral chip sand into ur sump system which causes some dirt to come up...

secondly..unfiltered water are passing through the coral chips..tts y the dirt are mainly trap as particles between the coral chips...

to MINIMIZE to NO3 spike...before the water even pass through the coral chips..water coming down from the overflow should be prefilter at LEAST twice..therefore it will minimize dirt passing through the coral chips..

just my 2 cents..

so brothers, as long as i keep my coral chips clean and have a prefilter before the water passes through them... then i should be alright with NO3 right??

Am i right to say that?? btw i have change water quite rigously for 2 mths liao... NO3 still not coming down.. the last water change i even used distilled water bought from ntuc... any gd ideas what more could i do?? already also set up a dsb for coming 2 mths liao...
