SRC Member zephyros Posted September 12, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted September 12, 2003 after reading so much in other (overseas) fourm, it seems like US hobbyists favour Instant Ocean. Is IO selling in our local LFS? Zephyros

SRC Member Volitan Posted September 12, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 12, 2003 coralife salt for me Me too. Cheap salt.
Achilles Tang
I use Coralife all these years and have not experienced anything bad about it. Tried tropic marine and red sea salt before. Tropic Marine seems to dissolve easiest and red sea the hardest. Coralife is somewhere in between. Perhaps the batch age can be a factor too, or bad packing. SRC Member Fireclown Posted September 12, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 12, 2003 Yeah! Coralife. The old packaging of coralife used to have this small pack of Traces of Elements. What happened to it?
Mellow
heard the Ca content in coral life very high. this guy apparently had 520ppm Ca without any Ca additives.... Quote "Save a reef, grow your own"
SRC Member dradttg Posted September 12, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 12, 2003 I am using Tropic Marine. I paid $35 for 6.2 kg. Is it usual to have to use 36 plastic spoon (the one that comes with packet rice) to bring 15 litres of water to 1.021? Please comment on your usage of the other brands. ie how much salt ? how many litres? etc. Thanks.

SRC Member Cookiemunster Posted September 12, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 12, 2003 I'm using tropic marine. Damn expensive. And needed so much!!!! I think it is less concentrated somehow. Thats why need more to get the ideal sg. Perhaps also this is the reason why it dissolves easier. But I am now beginning to think salt makes no god damn difference. As long as its marine salt get the cheapest of the lot. Taiwan brands even. To me it makes no difference cos I still does all the trace elements and calcium and carbonates too. Any comments on this? Mellow
Hi, Just my 2 cents worth..i think u will need some time(years maybe) to actually see the effects of a good and a lower grade salt. It's more of a long term result that u'll see by using higher quality salts...so if we change to a new brand of salt after we finish an old one, doubt u'll see much difference.... SRC Member Tanzy Posted September 12, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 12, 2003 I've used Coralife, IO, Reef Crystals and Tropic M. Not much difference with respect to the response from the tank inhabitants. Salts that I will never use are Red Sea and ME. ME is great for tanks that are new and just starting out but it's not advisable to switch to ME if you have been using conventional salts. Quote Warning: Heavy handed moderator in operation.
