i've got a book here that says many hobbyist mistake keeping it alive for 6mths as successful, but these corals tend to last for 6mths-1yr then suddenly die off for no reason.

so i agree with wetwebmedia

my advice: trust wat wetwebmedia says regarding this matter

Well i guess its really up to individual system.

I known guys who not only kept theirs well maintain, the coral even spread and start to encrust nearby rocks.

From him, he say a berlin sysytem works best for this type of corals, And also a tank which is slightly underskimmed is prefered too.

I have mine for about 8mths. No particular problems. Havent spread yet but stll open up eveyday even when my pair of clown fishes are using it as host and looks healthy (Full) too).

:off: I dont know abt u guys... but i notice they do catch small pieces of food. Had witness it caught and eat small shreds of shrimp and clam meat when i feed my fishes. Had anyone notice this b4 too?

From what I read, at most they show good in tank maybe up to a year.

then suddenly they will die-due-to-unknown.

In short term, you can try. If you soft heart ppl, very heart broken with a piece of coral sticked with you for months, then avoid it.

its really the term - Good Luck

Gonioporas fare badly mainly for 2 reasons...

1. If you read up on their habitat, they are usually found in murky, sediment laden waters rich in nutrients. Most aquariums do not provide these conditions, even underskimmed tanks won't be murky...Unless you make it a point to design a murky tank. All corals need a source of protein. They can either obtain it from dissolved nitrogeneous compounds or from live prey. I've never seen gonioporas actually capture and ingest prey like artemia nauplii but then again they could possibly be capturing prey invisible to the ###### eye (Bacteria species, etc).

2. Most gonioporas succumb to bacterial/other pathogenic diseases shortly after being collected. Generally it has got to do with their handling when they are being collected. As gonioporas are generally quite abundant in the wild, the collectors who sell them to middlemen earn very little. They make up for this by collecting more and crowding them in holding vessels probably leading to physical damage of individuals. If you think about the common flowerpot coral, it does take quite awhile for them to shrink down fully into their skeletons. Lifting them out of water before this happens can very easily lead to tissue damage and subsequent infection.

Always something more important than fish.

Yah, my initially seems doing fine. But due to some falling incidents, as inexperienced with epoxy. Also the last placement probably not good for them. Plus my Ocellaris keep on attempt to host on it.

Now its "bald" (dead) liao. :cry2:

I read somewhere that they found pods body in their stomach, guess they do well with live pods as food.

The one in my tank now is my second.

What i learned is that once u put yur gonio in a position never move it again.

Seems like they receed very fast after a few tumbles and moves.

I find goniporas pretty hardy. It and this other green montipora are like indestructable. they've gone through an anemone death, 2 tank crashes and a shift to natural sunlight after my last tank cracked. ( Have a reef in a tub now :( )

Any way its been with me for 2 years and even has a clown hosting it. all I do is target feed it every other day with cyclopeeze.

Well, for me, gonio is my source of "early warning system", when it does not open, time to do water change

Yeah same. Just judge by the coral can liao. :P

Just found out mine gonio is starting to grow back into its bare area. Those area has been there since i got it and now tiny 'flowers' are starting to appear there.

I guess its an easy/difficult coral depending on individual tank.

Like for my tank, everything can be well but i can never keep open brains...

Kept dying after a few months. <_<

so how 2 get rid of hair algae? is is those white colour 1 hair growing on lr's?

y hav hair algae when ur flowrate is right at the first place??

adding supplements lyk magnesium n strontium also helps to prevent hair algae from growing..correct me if im wrong abt tis...

but wad im sure that hair algae will not grow unless there is no proper flow in your tank..

my 2 cents.. :D
