SUmp is basically an additional tank that adds volume to your main tank.

THat means instead of a fix water in your tank, you have additional waters at the bottom. More water, your tank is more stable.

IF you have a 150L of water in your tank and you urine on it, your fish can smell it.

If you have a 150L of sump that makes your total volume to 300L. Now if you Urine on it, your fish may think it is your sweat. You can have a 300L of sump or your entire living room be a sump and when you Urine on your main tank, you fish won't know a thing. Temp will be stable as well.

Since it is a sump, you can do anything you want. YOu can add compartment to have your filte there, grow mangrove, sea weed, put skimmer there, chnage your water , or even swim there ( If you have a living room sump). So that means you design your sump base on your needs not others needs. There are many school of thought on what is should be. SOme put Deep sand bed and weeds to clear the Nitrate while others simple make it to an swimmong pool to collect revenue because the entry fee is damm expensive! What ever you decide, it is YOUR CHOICE. Just don't make it to a SPA! Get it SPA !!!HA HA HA. Go read !!!! and don't be lazy because you will ask what is an overflow and how to do it. And becasue you are LAZY I know at the end you will not do a sump.
